CARC CLUB HISTORY

The Carolina Amateur Radio Club has been in existence for over 30 years. Originally known as the Carolina Repeater Society it was an offshoot of the Palmetto Amateur Radio Club (which is the oldest South Carolina amateur radio club, having been founded in 1928 on "the Horseshoe" at the University of South Carolina).

Around 1976 the club name was changed to the Columbia Amateur Radio Club to include a broader range of interests, not just repeaters. From the beginning the club was active in promoting amateur radio, giving classes for new hams, and maintaining a testing team.

The CARC has always had active field days (a tradition which continues today). Early on CARC also hosted a few hamfests before having to give up on the idea due to the expense and effort involved.

Our thanks to Bill - KK4UX (a club secretary in the early 1980's) for his contributions to this history of the club.

If you can supply additional information about the history of the CARC or pictures of past events/officers/meetings etc., please contact the club secretary, David KI4LKG.
